I did a small bit of research, and perhaps I found a tool that will allow me to develop an exercise or two. Without delving deeply into the psychological research, I think the Plutchik Wheel will be a nice start:As I understand it, the middle ring consists of the eight basic emotions, the inner circle are the intensified versions of these emotions, and the outer ring are the lighter versions (the gateway feeling, if you will) of each emotion. The stuff on the outside are the complex emotions created through a combination of the two primary emotions. Remorse comes from disgust and sadness, for example.
So the rules for this exercise will be:
1. Each character makes one journey during one scene.
2. The emotional journey can be in one of five directions: In one step, out one step, stay in the same circle and move to the left, stay in the same circle and move to the right, or jump to the diametrically opposed emotion.
Stringing scenes together should follow these rules, taking each character one step in each scene.
If this is combined with Jim Van Pelt's wonderful Seven-Sentence Story, the denouement should reflect one of the final, complex emotions.
Thinking ahead (as I am wont to do), I will probably decide that the best stories are ones where characters move closer to the center as the story progresses
