[Politics] Obama's "Freudian slip"

beard
Romney's team has done a contextectomy on something President Obama said:

"If you have a successful business, you didn't build it."

Of course the full quote explains that successful business exist because everyone pitched in (via the government) to help make that business a success. There are no truly absolute self-made people in this world.

But Romney's people want us to think that Obama hates business people.

What I found interesting is a quote from Romney on the attack:

"He said, you didn't build your business, you don't get the responsibility."

(I agree this is a) a paraphrase, and b) a contextectomy).

Here is the real Freudian slip. I think Romney believes the only ethical constant is: If it helps the bottom line, it is good. If it hurts the bottom line, it is evil. Romney wants a world where businesses get all the reward, and no risk, and don't have to take responsibility for themselves. It's the weaponized version of self-reliability:

  • If the manufacturing plant is polluting your river, move up river.
  • If our drug has a fatal side-effect when combined with other drugs, it's the consumer's responsibility not to take these drugs at the same time.
I think Romney is dangerous precisely because he believes that human beings don't matter.
